Today's Horror Choices 05/23/16 - One Shiny Penny

Okay, let's get this out of the way right off the bat. Today is a one-two punch of Scatman Crothers' birthday AND the theatrical release date for the film horror fans know and love him from, The Shining. Go watch The Shining. Do it. Do it now. Sit down with your wife and kid, pour yourself a drink, and watch the fucking Shining.

I knew I bought this for a reason.

Today is also National Lucky Penny Day, so buy a scratcher and try your luck with Final Destination, Wishmaster, The Monkey's Paw and of course, Leprechaun in the Hood. You can say what you will about the franchise as a whole, or cheap celebrity guest stars, or racism, but to me the fifth outing in Warwick Davis's signature role will always be not only hilarious and charmingly gory, but also engaging and emotional. The climax really goes off with a bang, and you want the heroes' wacky, misguided plan to work at the end of the movie.

Plus, ya know....

If you'd prefer to explore the man on the penny itself, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was a fun and action-packed light horror romp which may have taken itself too seriously, but is still very enjoyable as long as you don't.

The Asylum attempted to cash in on the hype surrounding the film by releasing Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, which I don't believe I have seen, but given that it was in 2012, it just might be an enjoyable Z-movie in its own right.
